1. Understand the basic graphic design rule
It is an obvious points that mostly most of people forgotten, when designing a business cards you need to follow :

  • do not put your text or logo too close to the edge
  • use 300dpi image for a high resolution result
  • make sure you choose the right font size (about 10 - 11pt) to maintain legibility
  • always make sure you are working in CMYK format (best for prints)
  • use grid for a better alignment of your logo, text and images
  • set the hierarchy of where you want the person received your business cards to read first (name, title, logo,etc..) by setting up the size (bigger to smaller)

 

2. Play around with dimension & shapes
The standard size of business cards is 90 x 55mm. However, it does not mean you must follow the standard size - be different, make it a slim line or square. Having a different specifications can make your cards stand out than the others when it is lined up. Other than a normal trimmed why not try special shapes or die cut as card card-body (be crazy like having a business cards with a shape of a house for a real estate business, or foot shape for a massage shop) - it will definitely leave an impression to your customer.

3. Understand what is a Press Ready Artwork
One of the most common issues with designing and printing business cards is setting up the final press ready for the printer. Make sure you understand the press ready requirements of the printers you are going to print with - please find below the requirements of our press ready file :

  • artwork bleed 3mm all around (or download our help guide on each products)
  • internal bleed 2mm from the edge so your text will not be cut off
  • has to be CMYK
  • we only receive PDF format


4. Experiment with special finishes

The easiest way to make your business cards stand out in terms of looks and feel will be extra finishes such as embossing, debossing, foiling (gold, silver), Spot UV, laser cut and many more.

5. Double check your artwork
Last but note least is to always double check your artwork for any typo or wrong specification order (colour front and back or front only), make sure it is a press ready artwork to avoid wasting your time or missing your deadlines.
